Celebrating the 8th Anniversary of Conrad's Accident

Happy New Year! Today marks the 8th anniversary of Conrad’s accident. We celebrate life and we reflect on the gains Conrad continues to make on his road to recovery.  In 2011, Conrad started an assisted walking program using a stander and treadmill. He added speech therapy to his weekly routine to help him develop more consistent communication. He is much more vocal and responsive and best of all he is a healthy, happy boy.

Last year we resolved to better document and share Conrad’s story. We set the intention to shop interest in Conrad’s case in hopes of finding a researcher who could help better us understand Conrad’s cognitive functioning. We are happy to report that we have met our goal.Dr. Peter Fox, founder and head of the UT Health Science Center’s Research Imaging Institute has agreed to look into pilot a study that will benefit Conrad and other near drowning victims. Utilizing Resting State brain Imaging, he will analyze the brain activity and patterns of connections to detect which regions of brain are communicating with which other regions. Although the study will not provide any treatment recommendations, it will give us an indication as to the areas of the brain that have the best potential to regain function and could provide us a more targeted approach to therapy.

Our goal has always been to help Conrad reach his maximum potential and I believe in the unlimited potential of the brain to heal.  This research is a very critical step in the process and it is hard to contain our excitement. We set up a “Research" Page on the website if you are interested in more information.

We thank all of you who continue to follow Conrad.  2012 is shaping to be a BIG year and we look forward to sharing it with you!
